Georgia on my mind

Thoughts on returning to the south, Atlanta to be exact:
Ya, black people!
My cunning iPod knew to play Erykah Badu, sweet.
Nothing like the smell of black and mild to bring back memories of new Livingston hall.
Steve Harvey on the radio, hell yes.
Must find open Mic. Must find stage.

The Gift

(To listen to audio, go to the online store, in the bizmo, click the "+" next to poetics and select the poem by title.)
Children, you are not the future!
You are not the hope, nor the promise of a better tomorrow
You are not the byproduct of dreams dead, deferred, or denied  reincarnated as children
You have been told a lie “you are the future”
As tempting as it is, you are not temptation
You are satisfaction in constant action
paddling the canals of a now growing universe.
You are not the future because there is no future
What’s beyond the universe, but more stars? What’s beyond today, but more todays?
The future becomes a trap for knaves
The fools bare their dreams to this stage
souls screaming with passion and rage
While stomping bar after bar after bar building their Guantanamo their cage
Now, forever imprisoned until they in a grave, Alive!
Buried by a dream’s wooden paddle turned shovel.
The cruelty of a dream is only realized when it’s denied by its mother, the source of its birth.
A dream speaks,
“Why can’t I be loved now and held now? Why must I be held a day away?
I can’t live in your tomorrow’s! I paddle through the white waters of the Milky Way
galaxy to be in your arms, only to be arm’s length from your reality!?
If I must live in your tomorrows, you will surely suffer today!”

This is a warning. Harsh words from an idea born of love and purpose.
A dream not properly cared for will make you nervous.
You become a rubber band ball of stress, bouncing stress balls of the walls at your desk,
wishing there would be something better to your existence than this.
A dream knocks on your now, holds up 2 signs in Big Black Bold Letters,
1st reads
“GOT BETTER?”
2nd reads
“Here it is!”
Your response
“That would be nice. I can’t wait ‘til that happens.” But you do.
Wait for the right moment
Wait for the right time to ask
Wait for the cash
Wait for the perfect circumstance
which is only a day away and is always a day away.
Children, you want you to see your dreams today?
Don’t be tomorrows!
We sing of our love for tomorrow and its future promise but the future promises
always to be beyond the horizon
Just out of your grasp,
just beyond the point where actions are taken.
While those who have forsaken their dreams smile by the hopes of you
you can’t be their hope for a better tomorrow or you will suffer their same fate.
Jailed by the state of wait penitentiary
Where many were told dreams come true and now feel they were lied to.
They were.
Not about dreams becoming reality but about when and the way they do.
Patience is a virtue and procrastination is an excuse.
You must be you now
and strap dreams blood stone tight to your back
start where you are at
and
Walk Now, Hike Now,
Climb Now, Fight Now,
Help Now, Ask Now,
Work Now, Play Now,
Enjoy Now, Love Now,
 Hate Never, Fear Not,
Become Now, Because Now
is all we got. All we had, and all that will be given.
The Universe is now and Now always grows in trinity,
Nows that past, Nows that are here, and Nows to come.
Children, don’t be the future, ‘cause you are not the future.
Be the gift you were born to be, Now!

Peace and Unity Fest!!!! It's Back!

Peace and Unity Fest 2010

On August 7, 2010 Y.O.U.th (Youth Organized and United to Help) presents The 3rd Annual Peace and Unity Fest beginning at 1:00pm at the Mallory Avenue Community Enrichment Center (M.A.C.E) parking lot located at 126 N.E. Alberta Street.  Y.O.U.th  is a non-profit organization promoting opportunities for youth to explore their talents and gifts through an art medium.

The Peace and Unity Festival serves as a fundraiser for the upcoming 5th Annual Youth Summit (February 2011). The Peace and Unity Festival will feature celebrated local and national musicians and spoken word artists, community activists and faith leaders, and community vendors.

Invited speakers include: Host Pastor Fred D Woods (Calvary Christian Church), Rev. Renee Ward (Chrysalis Ministries), Universal Zulu Nation Member, Representative of the Nation of Islam, Representative of Hebrew Israelites Church, and more.

Featured artists include Ro Deezy, Rose Bent, Black Market, F.I.Y.A. as well as DJ’s from all over the Northwest.

Vendors will include small businesses and individuals who provide a service to our community.  The Peace and Unity Fest is a venue for these vendors to gain more exposure and support from the community.

The organizers of the event hope the Peace and Unity Fest serves as a magnet to assist us in “Building Our Community”.
School Supplies, along with your donation of $5, will assist families in need with the essential school supplies (backpacks, pens, pencils, paper, rulers, etc.) before the first day of school.  Proceeds benefit the 5th Annual Youth Summit.

For more information on how to volunteer or financially support the 5th Annual Youth Summit contact Imani Muhammad Y.O.U.th at 503-781-5313 or via email at info@travelingpillar.com.  Visit their website at www.youthsummit09.blogspot.com

Who is the enemy?
Who do I fight when they try to kill me?
Do we pick our foes like we tip on toes on hard wood floors that creak?
Trying to sneak by silently.
I Protest the best that's inside of me
violently waking a caged beast I was bred to be
with a steady diet of lies.
A savory sweet Sunday on a Sunday afternoon.
A savory defeat to my ego's enemy is a spoonful of truth Monday morning.
Good, mourning the death of hope.
It took courage for it to walk that tight rope.
When it was tethered between the towers.
Planes crash land.
Told god some jokes, the punchlines were my plans.
God laughs until it rains, I cry...

How to get into hip hop

It has been ask of me recently, to provide guidance on how to get into hip hop music. It can be overwhelming with all the rappers, emcees, and everything in between claiming to be real hip hop and flooding the sound waves with their version of the music. The reality, hip hop is diverse! People draw distinction between rap and hip hop, but really it all stems from the culture of hip hop and there are many branches. So how do you navigate your way through the varieties of hip hop? Start with what you’ve heard and liked. Find out who the artist is and who they have worked with. Since like minds flock together you will begin rapidly expanding your hip hop collection with similar sounding artist. Also you may want to find out who produces the tracks (music without the lyrics).  After all it was the music of hip hop that got me hooked and if that is the case for you, follow the producers. Eventually you will develop an ear to appreciate good music production and lyrics, and you have to work at. It is my opinion that the best of hip hop is not represented in pop culture, so you have to do your research to find it. To get you on the right foot, in the right direction, Here is my list of recommended artist to begin listening to.
